We are the counterfeiters.

Dance with Nietzsche– “We should consider every day lost on which we have not danced at least once.”

Who are we?

The Counterfeiters is a platform I established in 2022 for the exchange and popularization of Western modernist literature at Hangzhou Foreign Languages School. The name of the platform comes from Gide’s novel “The Counterfeiters,” in which he explores modern art and the literary genre of the novel. Reality is the genuine coin, while ideas and theories are counterfeit. The circulation of counterfeit currency leads to inflation and devaluation, as people fear. Counterfeit coins are made of glass, coated with gold dust, and make a crisp sound when dropped on the table. This sound is pleasant, and the glass counterfeit coins are exquisite and beautiful.

We are a group of counterfeiters. We manufacture counterfeit coins and put them into circulation. We are proud of our work because these counterfeit coins, while deceptive, are even more beautiful than genuine gold coins. Please scan the QR code to read our articles and follow us on our Wechat official website.

From their book reports, I sense a pride in the absurdity of 'preferring to write poetry over not writing poetry.' I see that a mining-like reading mode has been initiated: familiarizing oneself with an author, thoroughly reading the works of an author, and sharing the joy of reading with each other.

This is a collection of essays tinged with the colors of dawn, blending modernity and poetry so seamlessly that it's hard to believe these writings came from a group of young boys and girls. What is most astonishing is the tastefulness of these works. In an age where the classics are often overlooked, these essays remind us that the great writers and their masterpieces are still very much alive, resonating within the hearts of sensitive young minds. The echoes of the literary temple persist. Goethe, Hugo, Joyce, Kafka, Rimbaud, Gide, Thomas Mann, Hesse, Faulkner, Camus, Henry Miller… Some of these authors are considered "challenging" even by professional writers, yet these children have reinterpreted them in their own way, imbuing them with a rare freshness.

When the possibilities of life are continuously played out in time and space, when every possibility in the infinite universe becomes a necessity, when human life is no different from that of an apple, life has no mission, joy is meaningless, and pain is meaningless. Yet, even after casting off the burden of meaning, joy remains sweet and pain still makes one’s heart tremble with fear.

I want to tell you about the fervor of life, the fervor of death, the emotions stirred by sleepless nights or being submerged in a sea of cars, the desires of the city and the world. There is a secret reason that makes people live in these cities, a reason that can overcome all crises. Every word is the atmosphere of life, every story is the desire of the world.

Literature is true life, life that is discovered and clarified; it is my Menalque.
